The first step is fundamental in being able to achieve the most important milestones in life. It’s always difficult to take the first step on an unknown path but once you start walking, slowly, step by step, you begin to find your way and you are able to go far. Keeping this in mind, CABSS created "The First Step ...” a multisensory laboratory with the generous support of The Johnson & Johnson Foundation.
The laboratory will provide deaf and deafblind children and parents the tools and the psychological support needed in order to achieve both personal and interpersonal goals. The laboratory is divided into two parts, one devoted to the support and accommodation of families and the other to activities and education of deaf and deafblind children.
The multisensory environment was inspired by the criteria set out for the “Snoezelen”. The word "Snoezelen", a contraction of the Dutch verbs "snuffelen" (sniff) and "doezelen" (relax). It indicates a multisensory approach that aims to help the person perceive the world around them, starting from self with the intent of progressing through authentic experiences with others. The core of the philosophy stresses the importance of using the senses to get in tune with life, communicate with the outside world, be totally present in the “here and now ", and that the senses are the primary channels through which all sensations are perceived.
The area is equipped with multisensory innovative equipment, games, communication tools and psychological tests. There is a super solar light projector that projects various images on the wall creating a stimulus for communication and/or relaxation. The floor is covered with soft blue mats, is insulated and lightweight. The walls are covered with orange mats that are non-toxic and fire resistant. There is a ball pool containing colored balls allowing children to gain visual and tactile input, an awareness of self and the opportunity to build gross motor skills in safe and fun way. Two "bubble tubes, were also installed creating a visual stimulus of bubbles and colours. On the walls, you’ll find interactive panels for visual and tactile stimulation. There is a dollhouse, a table with four small chairs, crayons, markers, clay, tactile books and an olfactory sensory kit. The laboratory, with its combination of colors, lights, sounds, and tactile stimuli creates a relaxing and stimulating atmosphere for children.
