The “Roberto Wirth” Scholarship

The “Roberto Wirth” scholarship for deaf students was awarded for the first time in 1992 by the Italian Fulbright Commission (Commission for cultural exchanges between Italy and the United States).Since then, every year, one student is given the opportunity to study at Gallaudet University, Washington D.C., the only bilingual university in the world (American Sign Language and English) fully accessible to deaf and hard of hearing students and offers training to students to become professionals in the area of Deafness.

Students have the opportunity to take specialized courses in Education, Psychology and Counseling. They participate in lectures and are individually supported in the development of their research projects in the area of Childhood Deafness. In addition, they are given the opportunity to specialize for four months as a placement student at several preschools in Washington D.C.

The “Roberto Wirth” scholarship is very unique because once students return to Italy they are able to apply what they learnt to support deaf children.
